Entrepreneurial “De” Motivation

16 Jun

For my very first post, I wanted to feature quotes from well-respected African entrepreneurs; delicious home-brewed words of encouragement and wisdom. Googled and googled, couldn’t find anything! Then I finally figured, why not just share my own thoughts on what I have learned over the years.

Enterpreneurial Motivation

Motivation for Entrepreneurs

1. YOU WILL BE VERY,VERY LONELY
Entrepreneurship is not a club. Even among your “peers” people will find you odd and quizzical. Your ideas will sometimes be treated with righteous indignation and snorts, but nothing worth anything starts out in a crowd. Every tree grows out of a seed which works in isolation- never heard of a bird that collaborated when hatching.

“To be able to lead others, a man must be willing to go forward alone.” -Harry Truman

2. YOU WILL DO ALL THE HARD WORK BY YOURSELF
Which brings me to my second point. You are going to do everything by yourself. Messenger, Customer Care Executive, Secretary, Cleaner, EVERYTHING! If you find yourself thinking you’ll start when all these people are around, you’re in terrible, terrible trouble.

“Nothing would be done at all if we waited until we could do it so well that no one could find fault with it.” – John Henry

3.YOU WILL FAIL
OK. We hope you will succeed too.
However, you will also fail miserably. You will spend money in your business and realise you actually through money out the window. You will work with people and have things go wrong. You will inevitably at some point, be on your knees someday, with little else but your tears in your hands.

“A real entrepreneur is somebody who has no safety net underneath them.” – Henry Kravis

4.YOU WILL NOT KNOW EVERYTHING/BE FULLY PREPARED.
This really does not need explaining.

AND

5. YOU WILL ACCOMPLISH A GREATER UNDERSTANDING AND RESPECT FOR OTHERS AND YOURSELF
There are a lot of bloggers out there, some in the “Best Blogs of this or that year” complaining and deriding the already fragile world of the entrepreneur with “Don’t do this or we’ll use you for THE case study on the worst business practices”. Without discussing them further, don’t be daunted. Push on. Pick yourself up everyday, allow NO self-pity. Don’t give up. God hasn’t given you the ideas and gifts you have so that you can give them back to Him unscathed. For even trying, you will develop an appreciation for everyone even those with the “ugly” websites and yourself, despite your mistakes.

6.YOU WILL ENJOY IT
You will sweat under the hot sun, get blisters on the cold hard days, even get pushed back to START by strong winds. But at the end of it when you look back, they’ll be no sign of those experiences. Just the really nice weather of success and satisfaction of achievement. And the people in number 1 will be trying to get under your umbrella.

“The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same.” – Carlos Castaneda
